  6. The first chess computers in the 1950s were considered a joke. But nobody is
  7. laughing anymore.
  8.  
  9. If chess is on the cutting edge of artificial intelligence, then color "jaws"
  10. Deep Blue. Just like the killer shark in the movie, IBM's silicon mauler is
  11. crunching more and more of the world's leading players.

  13. The latest victim of this shark attack is the top-ranked female in history.
  14. Where will it end?

  16. Jaws sank its teeth into Judith Polgar, 17, a teen whiz who upended the great
  17. Boris Spassky in Budapest last February and USA national champ Patrick Wolff
  18. in Boston last August. But while touring America, she got jarred by jaws at
  19. IBM's T. J. Watson Lab in upstate New York.

  21. She lost the first game and eked out a draw in the second against a Deep Blue
  22. prototype. "I need some practice, then I'll kill it," she quipped. Later she
  23. opined it was just a matter of time before humans were doomed: "By then, no
  24. one will care. Right now it's interesting."

  26. Both games were played at a fast clip of 30 minutes per side. In 1989 world
  27. champ Gary Kasparov trounced Deep Thought under strict tournament conditions.
  28. The next clash is due in 1994 when Jaws 2 is expected to pack the wallop of
  29. 1,000 supercomputers by analyzing a billion positions in a split second.

  31. What will happen then? "Kasparov is charismatic, charming. You can sense his
  32. strong will, a smoldering fire beneath the surface. Judith is personable,
  33. more easygoing," said a programmer who sat across the board from them to make
  34. moves for his man-eating monster.

  36. "Chess is about 30% psychology. You don't have this with a machine. You can't
  37. confuse it," said Judith, who was thrown on the defensive in the very
  38. opening. She hung on grimly but faded towards the end, though it's hard to
  39. see how White could make progress after simply 56...Kd6,

  41. Judith got chewed up when she overlooked that 59 Bxf5! exf5 60 Ra7 Kf8 61 Rh8
  42. Bg8 62 Ra8 Ke7 63 Rhxg8 wins. After gaining this key pawn jaws never released
  43. its prey from a lethal grip, though she flailed for another dozen moves.
